• Newstead was named after Newstead House, built in 1846, is Brisbane’s oldest surviving European home. Evolving from a simple cottage into a grand residence after significant renovations in 1867, renovations are currently on going. From May 1932 the Historical Society of Queensland established the house as a museum and it was the first property in Queensland to be protected by an act of Parliament – the Newstead House Trust Act 1939.

• The adjoining Newstead Wharf received its first ship in 1937.

• The gasometer frame is now a feature of the Gasworks Plaza (apartments buildings, office towers and restaurants). The gasometer was constructed in 1887 and operated through to 1996 when natural gas took over.

• The Booroodabin Bowls Club is named after the original local government area.
